Reiki for humans and Animals
What is Reiki
Reiki is a Japanese energetic technique that is beneficial for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. The International Center for Reiki Training (ICRT) explains: “Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind, and spirit, creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well-being.”
Reiki has been used in Japan for over 100 years. In 1937, Mrs. Hawayo Takata (Takata Sensei) brought Reiki from Japan to the United States but this style of Reiki was developed in 1922 by Dr. Mikaso Usui (Usui Sensei). If you would like to learn more about the history of Reiki, visit the ICRT’s website for a detailed history.
How Does Reiki Work
Everything is made up of energy: people, animals, nature, the world around us, literally everything! Life force energy is called different things in different cultures, like ki or chi and some believe it flows through the human body through chakras. During a Reiki session, Reiki energy is transmitted through the hands of the Reiki practitioner to the client through various hand positions [1].
What is a Reiki session like

All sessions with Stacey last between 30-45 minutes, with time at the beginning to talk about any physical, emotional, or spiritual concerns that you are hoping to address in the session. For in-person sessions this is done directly and for virtual sessions, this is done using a surrogate that takes the place of the client. With either type of session, some clients report physical sensations, warmth, and enhanced relaxation while others do not experience any physical sensations at all.
In-person Sessions. Reiki is not a massage, although sometimes licensed massage therapists also offer Reiki. The Reiki that we offer at Kaya is trauma informed and no-touch. That can be helpful for people who would like to try Reiki but feel uncomfortable being touched. The image to the right shows Stacey giving Reiki to a client, you can see her hands are close to the client’s head but not touching. At times, a light static (non-moving) touch may be used but Stacey will discuss this with you and receive consent prior to the session. Reiki is done fully clothed, typically on a massage table but it can also be done while you are sitting in a chair. Most people choose to close their eyes but you do not have to if you don’t feel comfortable doing so.
After the session, you will have time to talk about anything that you experienced and Stacey can also share with you any energetic and intuitive observations that she had during your session.
Virtual Online Sessions. Online sessions are scheduled like in-person sessions. You will meet with Stacey over Zoom video chat at the time you select, and talk about what to expect. Then you may be instructed to lie down and relax as you would if you were receiving Reiki in-person. This is not necessary but many clients enjoy having dedicated relaxation time as they would in-person.
Stacey will use a surrogate to send Reiki to you for the duration of the session. Distance Reiki works as well as in-person Reiki, and some clients say that they prefer being in the comfort of their own space during the session. With virtual sessions, Stacey will send you an email after the session to share any energetic and intuitive observations that occurred during your session.

Is Reiki a Religion? Can Christians and other religions use reiki?
Reiki is not a religion. For clients receiving Reiki, there is no religious or even spiritual aspect at all. Reiki practitioners are all different; some may practice a religion and some may have no religious affiliation at all. Any/all religions or belief systems are compatible with Reiki.

Reiki For pets
For many of us, our animals are part of the family. As with humans, animals can benefit from Reiki. Because they’re not able to communicate with us by speaking, animals let us know how they are feeling through their behavior. Whether your pet is experiencing physical difficulties that come from aging, like arthritis; struggling emotionally after the loss of another pet or human; or just isn’t acting like themselves, Reiki can be helpful.
As with humans, animal Reiki can be done in-person or via distance Reiki. Depending on your pet’s specific needs, distance Reiki may be advisable even if you live locally. After speaking with you, Stacey will let you know which type of Reiki is recommended for your pet.
Reiki is not a substitute for medical veterinary care so please be sure to speak to your vet about any changes in behavior that you notice in your pet prior to seeking out Reiki energy. Reiki is complimentary and should not be used in place of routine or emergency vet care!
Animal Communication
Stacey has trained with Danielle MacKinnon to learn Soul Level Animal Communication. If you wish, intuitive animal communication can be added to your pet’s Reiki session. Stacey has experience working with dogs, cats, birds, and horses through Soul Level Animal Communication.

My Reiki Lineage
When training in Reiki, students are able to trace their lineage through their teachers all the way back to Usui Sensei (Dr. Usui). My Master Teachers at Reiki4Life trained with different Master Teachers themselves, which makes the lineage more diverse than some. You can see from the graphic to the right how all of their teachers may be traced back to Mrs. Takata, who was instrumental in bringing Reiki from Japan to the United States.
